Mitigating Circumstances
(formerly known as Extenuating Circumstances)
It is essential to recognise that illness and difficult or distressing events do occur and that it is a normal part of life to manage these. Students also have a responsibility to manage their own workload throughout the year.
It is recognised that there may be circumstances which prevent students from completing assessments and a student may apply for mitigating circumstances to be taken into consideration where they feel their performance in assessments has been affected by circumstances beyond their control – that is, circumstances which were unforeseen and unpreventable.
Mitigating Circumstances is used to describe those things which cause exceptional interference with academic performance, over and above normal difficulties.

- Find the ‘Mitigating Circumstances’ tile and click onto the ‘Fill out’ button to open the request form and start your application. You can save your form as a draft and return to it later if required
A step by step guide on how to make an application through OneUni can be found here: Student’s Guide – Applying for Mitigating Circumstances in OneUni
If you are a Postgraduate Research student please go to Page 5 of the Student’s Guide.
Please be aware that;
- The deadline for submitting a claim is 10 working days after the assessment event. If you have been granted an extension the 10 working days relates to your extended deadline.
- If your claim is successful your original mark will no longer be set to zero. If you choose to attempt your assessment again you will be awarded the higher of the two marks.
- If your claim is unsuccessful you will have a maximum of 15 working days after you are notified of the outcome of your claim to provide further evidence.
Accompanying evidence must:
- Relate to the dates of the assessment
- Be independent – i.e. from a doctor, counsellor etc. Please note that a letter from a parent/guardian or another student is not independent evidence. If the claim is based on medical grounds, it is expected that corroborating medical evidence be provided.
- Personal Academic Tutor statements can be submitted in support of claims. This, as with all evidence, should describe the impact of the circumstances on the student’s ability to complete the relevant assessment or exam. However, a student should also evidence or at least explain their attempts to obtain the evidence relevant to their circumstances. Personal Academic Tutor statements should be provided via e-mail so they are clearly signed and dated, and the student should upload the ‘.msg’ file as evidence so the statement can be verified.
Further information on the evidence required
NOTE: The Mitigating Circumstances panel can only make decisions on claims based on the evidence submitted – they cannot make assumptions regarding any circumstances nor the affect that these would have had on a student’s ability to study, or on the dates that would have been affected.
The decision of the panel is communicated via University email to the student, copied to the School office.
