Am I an Estranged Student?

If you are studying or planning to study at University without the support of your family, you could be an estranged student. You could be estranged if:

You have no communicative relationship with either living biological parent and this is unlikely to change.
You have been disowned by your family, or you have chosen to remove yourself from your family situation.

Estrangement can happen before or during your University studies, and it is important to remember that Student Services are here to support you throughout your journey at the University of Lincoln.

Support prior to & throughout your studies

Here at the Student Wellbeing Centre, we have a dedicated Wellbeing & Mental Health Advisor who can help coordinate support for you with internal and external services.

We will try to make your transition to University as easy as possible and give you advice on pre-application and guidance for offer holders. We can also support with accommodation all year round and help you find somewhere to live for the whole year.

We understand that estrangement may put additional pressure on your studies, as well as your wellbeing, and we are here to support you all year round.

The This Is Us student-led community on Mighty Networks is a dedicated and safe online space for estranged and care-experienced students at University in the UK to connect, share info, arrange meet-ups and more! It’s free, national and open to all ages & years of study.

First Contact Appointments

If you are an enrolled student here at the University of Lincoln and would like to explore available support or chat about anything that is going on for you at the moment, you can access wellbeing support from one of our advisors through one of our First Contact appointments.

First Contact appointment times:

Monday- Friday: 10am-4pm

Thursdays (term-time only): 5pm-7pm

The Advice Team

The Advice Team are an independent, confidential service located in the Student Support and Advice Centre. Support from the Advice Team includes welfare benefits, housing, employment and much more. If you are unsure on how to prove your estrangement, speak to the Advice Team and they can offer support.

The Stand Alone Pledge

The University of Lincoln has signed the Stand Alone Pledge. This is to help estranged students to overcome disadvantaged they may face when studying. We are one community, and here at the University of Lincoln, we are committed to supporting students who are studying without the support and approval of their families.
